Cheerioh!

Welcome to the fifth edition of my newsletter! Now the new year can begin – because now we rock all 12 again! Without any further big words – let’s dive into my music, Rock’n’Roll and the latest from life as a stage artist without safety net.

All editions of this newsletter and other articles are also available on my blog.

Today: Rock’n’Roll for beginners

Rock’n’roll has many meanings and equivalents. Everyone makes a little of what it is for them personally. For some it is the musical beginnings around Chuck Berry, Bill Haley or Jerry Lee Lewis. For others, it’s ACDC. Some only associate it with clichés about drugs, excess and loud music or corresponding clothes. Still others use the term in totally different contexts.

For me, rock’n’roll has a clear musical beginning, roots and messages. However, for me it also means change.

In 1974 Jon Landau wrote “I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen”. As a teenager and Boss fan, I was enthusiastic about it and secretly I wanted to be the one who embodies rock’n’roll in the future. Call it hubris or the quirk of burdening yourself with things that are a little too big – I had a vision. Unfortunately, I was the only one who was driven by rock’n’roll in my environment. To this day I am looking for this environment that enables things that others do not dare to dream of. Of course, I would like to encourage everyone to look for the ideal environment for themselves in order to develop their own potential. But you also have to accept that reality is often a little more complex.

Nevertheless, I am convinced that on the way to this place you can definitely find ways to let your inner rock’n’roller take the wheel. This was the only way I managed, against all advice, to make music my main occupation. I went on stage doing comedy even though everyone said I wasn’t funny. I did secular theater at a Catholic school in which Jesus is a legend and rocked Highway to hell to the applause of nuns. I left almost everything behind me overnight and drove south with no destination, no schedule, no budget and no plan B until I saw the sea.

So often one only sees one way from A to B and the consequences it would have to deviate from this way. Rock’n’Roll helps me to deviate from the path, because it creates new possibilities all by itself.

In this sense: let a little more rock’n’roll in your life in 2022 – in whatever form that may be.

blu12 perspective

Every month – right here – you will get my very own personal perspective: today the view of the water somewhere on the Italian Riviera. The quote is an excerpt from my song “Tiny worlds”, which is about the power that is in the quiet, hidden but at the same time it usually arises from just as much pain and deprivation.

What am I doing all day? What’s new & what does that mean for you?

“Some people achieve the most when they do nothing at all”. Perhaps you have read or heard this saying in one variation or another. There is an important truth behind this. But these people don’t actually do nothing, it’s just sometimes not visible from the outside.

For me this “nothing” is thinking. I think a lot, both by nature and work-related. As a creative person, I need a lot of ideas for the content, which I produce e.g. in the form of music, texts, arrangements or this newsletter.

Some ideas come straight away, from the context of something or are already there when I need them. For others I have to look first. Sometimes a single sentence takes hours. Sometimes I can’t write or speak as quickly as my thoughts and ideas are bubbling up. Either way, it requires a tremendous amount of focus. Concentrating hard over a longer period of time is hard work, comparable to hard physical work, only mentally. Accordingly, one is similarly exhausted afterwards.

In addition, many good texts or music arise from the sum of personal crises that an artist goes through. The composition of a successful piece of music is sometimes only the last step from climbing a mountain to the summit.

So feel free to take your own time to think more often. In this way you can not only appreciate the work of others better, but also come up with cool ideas yourself!

If you didn’t have a good start into 2022 after this newsletter, please contact me personally! Otherwise we’ll read each other in exactly one month when „6, drugs & rock’n’roll? We rock all 12!“ is back.
